When saddle stitched booklets are the best option
There are many ways to bind a publication. From perfect bound, to wiro bound, to hardback books and saddle stitched booklets. With so many options it can often feel overwhelming to know which option is best for you. We’ve pulled together a guide for when saddle stitched booklets might just be the best option for your print.
What is saddle stitching?
Saddle stitching is a way of binding together booklets as little as 8 pages up to approximately 68 pages. Pages are folded in half to create a 4 page section, which are then put together and bound with long wire staples along the fold to secure them together. Saddle stitched booklets must therefore always be in multiples of 4 due to the nature of their binding method.
What sort of publications suit saddle stitching?
As long as your publication falls within the remit of 8-68pp you can consider saddle stitched binding. They are an economical binding method which is relatively strong and reliable – meaning they can be used for a multitude of publications. From company brochures, to product guides, instruction manuals, to catalogues, story books, to travel guides, price guides, and even information booklets. The list is endless.
When to choose saddle stitching?
Saddle-stitching is the ideal solution when you are only printing in smaller quantities. With a straightforward binding method and quick turnaround, saddle stitching is a very cost-effective printing option. The size of your publication may also dictate whether or not to opt for saddle stitching. From A6 to A4, portrait, landscape, and the odd square shape, this printing method has a few size options to choose from.
Things to consider when using saddle stitching
The page count must always be in multiples of 4 to avoid any blank pages. Ensure there is plenty of safe area around the margins and edges so you don’t lose sight of anything within the fold. The thicker the booklet gets, the more will get trimmed off the middle pages, so make sure you accommodate for this. A 5mm clearance should be enough, but if you are unsure, talk to the printer you are using to see if they have any specific requirements for finished artwork and print PDF files.
