The perfect canvas size for your wall
So, you want to use a personalised canvas print in your home?
But what size is the perfect size and fit for your wall and space?! When deciding to dress a room using canvas printing, the size of your choice, be they rectangular canvas prints or square canvas prints can really make or break your room’s current décor. Those magnificent panoramic prints your relative had made from their travels could overpower the delicately arranged shabby chic décor of your bijou apartment and likewise, small square canvas prints can be lost on a vast wall in a Victorian-style property with high ceilings. So, there is a bit to think about before ordering your prints and here we can help with some info and suggestions to help you add a personal touch:
How to Choose the Perfect Canvas Size for Your Wall?
Read the Room!
Take a bit of time to play about a bit before committing to a sizable print. If the print is going above your sofa, mark out the sizes with masking tape, post-it notes or similar to get an idea of sizes and shapes. It may be that you opt for a square print or portrait style but unless you experiment you may be disappointed if you commit to a shape and size too early.
It is said by those in the know, that wall art should take from 60% to 75% of the available space on your wall, so measure the height and width and multiply both by 0.60 and 0.75, you will then have your size range to work with most suitable for your wall. If the canvas is going above a piece of furniture, then ideally it needs to be 2/3 or ¾ the width of said piece of furniture be it a sofa or fireplace.
Following on from this, the piece of canvas prints you are grouping together should be hung, preferably using a hanging kit, approximately 6 – 12 inches above the top of the furniture which will give some breathing space and be easy on the eye.
Size Matters!
So, you’ve read about room and décor and have your size ranges. Now for some specifics for the different styles. For a photo to be panoramic it needs to be at least twice the width of its height and our phones these days are great at capturing our treasured memories ready to turn into the perfect artwork, fantastic! 50″×16”, 58″×20”, or 36″×12” are the professional recommendations for panoramic canvas printing.
Square canvases are contemporary and modern, think all those Instagram-able shots you have on your phone, and for these, the standard sizes are 8”x8”, 10×10”, 12”x12” and 20”x20” though of course you can go smaller, think cute mini squares people have on desks.
Another option might be to create a collage canvas print, using family photos or photos from that office away day? Yes that one … then you might want a portrait canvas … these dimensions can range from 4”x6” to 16”x20” for small to medium jumping to the large canvas prints ranges of 18”x24” to 48”x72” for epic prints that fill a wall.
Go have fun, experiment some more, it is ultimately up to you but having a play around with these guidelines before you create a canvas print, will help you to get that perfect canvas size. And having that will then really add ambience to your home instead of taking it away!
